Community Retailer

Since the deregulation of Alberta’s electricity and natural gas markets, there have been opportunities for profits to be made through the sale of energy to consumers, as well as an opportunity to help consumers save money on the energy they purchase.

Since the inception of our Community Retailer program in 2009, UTILITYnet has helped many new competitive Community Retailers enter into Alberta’s deregulated market. The program features a low-cost business model that offers a unique opportunity for those looking to create a new revenue stream either for themselves, or to fund community programs and infrastructure. It is now possible for entrepreneurs, cooperatives and municipalities to enter the electricity and natural gas market with low-risk and minimal cost.

The Program:

  • Allows Community Retailers to operate under UTILITYnet's electricity and natural gas marketing licenses issued by Service Alberta.
  • Leverages UTILITYnet’s access to low-cost energy supply contracts, which means long-term predictability in costs for Community Retailers and relatively lower prices for consumers.
  • Utilizes UTILITYnet's existing web-based customer service computer systems for billing and access to UTILITYnet's local customer care team.
  • Allows for Community Retailers to set their own competitive prices. Residential consumers benefit from lower prices and local businesses can improve their competitive advantage.
  • Ensures no interruption to a customer’s service. Customers can feel confident in their supply of energy and are never at risk for disconnection, even if they are dropped for reasons such as non-payment.
